Description

Mushrooms of the Pleurotus genus fruit in environments with wide variations in temperature and humidity, making them by far the best option for mushroom cultivation for consumption. They can be cultivated on various types of substrates, such as grasses, banana leaves, coffee grounds, sawdust, sugarcane bagasse, and wood pieces, preferably enriched with wheat bran. It is recommended to study production beforehand due to the different substrate availability in each region.


Pleurotus ostreatus is one of the most widely produced edible mushroom varieties in Brazil and worldwide. Introduced to the country through Asian cuisine, this mushroom stands out for its climate adaptability, productivity, and aggressive mycelium.

Cultivation

This mushroom is excellent for beginners, highly resistant and aggressive. Its varieties can be cultivated year-round, except for cold-climate varieties (such as black shimeji).

Pleurotus ostreatus is one of the most widely produced edible mushroom varieties in Brazil and worldwide. Introduced through Asian cuisine, it stands out for its climate adaptability, productivity, and aggressive mycelium. Very common on decaying trees in the Atlantic Forest region.


Medicinal use

Its beneficial beta-glucans stimulate the immune response. It is also effective in controlling blood pressure and diabetes, has beneficial properties for the liver, stimulates the immune system, and inhibits the development of some tumors, viruses, and bacteria. It is rich in protein, containing 18.7% protein on a dry matter basis, with eleven amino acids. It also contains medicinal compounds reported in scientific literature, including beta-glucans in amounts similar to those in Agaricus blazei (polysaccharides are common to all mushrooms as part of the hyphal wall) and low molecular weight compounds such as lovastatin (cholesterol-lowering and used in cardiopathy therapies) and numerous polar, medium polarity, and nonpolar water-soluble compounds, including ergosterol derivatives.


Culinary use

Highly versatile in the kitchen. It can be used in vegetable broths, Asian soups, stir-fries, breaded, grilled, or sautéed. With its characteristic sweet aroma, it is highly appreciated for its flavor.
